Michael Kon, M.Ed., CAADC
OUTPATIENT COUNSELOR
My style of counseling has evolved over many years of individual counseling. My three main elements in the counseling relationship have come from experience and I have found them to be the most relevant in my own personal life.First I have found working in the addiction field that the disease of addiction is physical, mental and spiritual and must be treated on all those dimensions. From that learning I have to see myself as a faith-based counselor. Secondly I also incorporate in counseling a client centered approach, trusting in the clients ability to freely express his needs and struggles, if I can allow him the space to talk openly. Third and finally as a counselor I must listen actively to what is being said to understand where a person is at in his or her own life and not to impose my own understandings on them. At the point in counseling when mutual respect has come about I feel there is place for own views on what my be helpful, to be brought into the counseling relationship.
